Hello Magdalen families,

It is hard to believe that the school year is drawing to a close! Our last day is Tuesday, May 19th with Field Day!  It has been a great year and we feel blessed to have been a part of each child’s growth as a Catholic student.  Please be sure to check the website throughout the summer for updates on the school calendar and handbook for 2026-2027.

The school office summer hours will be as follows:

The school office will be closed on Thursday, May 21st , Friday, May 22nd and Monday, May 25th.

School Office hours beginning on May 26th will be Monday - Thursday from 9:00-1:00.  The school office will be closed every Friday.

The school office will be closed from June 19 - July 24th

Beginning Monday, July 27th, we will return to regular office hours.  Monday through Friday, 7:30 – 4:00.

Registration will be online again this year through PowerSchool.  All forms will be filled out via online registration.  It is very important during registration that we have an accurate address, phone numbers, and emergency contacts for your child(ren).  We will still have registration times available for parents who wish to pay with cash or check.  Our online registration dates will open on Monday, July 20th and will close on Wednesday, August 5th.  If you need help with online registration or would like to pay for registration fees with cash or check, please stop by the office during our office hours beginning on Monday July 27th.

Our used uniform sale will be Wednesday, June 3rd from 9AM to Noon and Thursday, June 4th from 4PM-6PM.  This is your chance to sell uniforms or spirit wear that your kiddos have outgrown or purchase for next school year.  Items need to have a label attached with your name and amount you are asking for the item.  If you want to just donate your items to PTO then they will price the item for you.  Items can be dropped off at the office anytime before June 1st.  If you would like to volunteer to work the sale please email Mindy Mayhill at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or text at 316-648-3726.  This is a great stewardship opportunity!

We will continue to bulk order the following items through the school this year:  paper towels, Kleenex, disinfecting wipes, copy paper and baby wipes.  These items will no longer be listed on the school supplies for individual grades (unless a teacher is requesting them for their  classroom).  With our bulk purchasing power, we can purchase these items in an economical fashion and save our families from hauling in bulky supplies on the first day!

Registration Fees, for the 2026-2027 school year will be as follows:

PS/PK – prepaid through preregistration

Kindergarten and Grade 1 - $355

Grade 2nd -7th  - $375

Prior to registration, ALL PARENTS MUST BE VIRTUS trained to be eligible for registration.  Thank you!

Class lists will be sent out via messenger prior to the office closing for the summer!  All classrooms will be in full compliance with the Diocesan class size policy, promulgated by Bishop Kemme.  We will meet or exceed all resource staff support systems in our larger classes.  This policy is posted on our Magdalen website.

Please see the rest of the Mustang Weekly for important information about the last week of school.

We hope everyone has a relaxing, fun-filled, and safe summer.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Patterson

Hello Parents,

Staff Appreciation Week is May 4th-8th.  We are very blessed at Magdalen by our entire team: teachers, aides, office, maintenance, cafeteria and the church office.  It takes a village and ours is really special!

If you are able, I would encourage you to write a note of support this week to those you’d like to acknowledge and show appreciation.  In our world, emails often deal with issues or problems, so what a delight it is to receive positive and encouraging ones!

In this week’s Mustang Weekly, we will have several sign-ups available for you to help us make our appreciation week even more special.  We will be asking for help with recess duty on Thursday, May 7th and for you to send gift cards in to shower the staff with a small token of appreciation.

While Staff Appreciation is the Week of May 4th, we also have many other activities going on in May as well.  Here are a few important dates you might want to put on your family calendar:

May 1st : Principal for the Day!  Be on the lookout for a special message next Thursday from our co-principals!

May 5th, 6th and 7th: Middle School Musical (more detailed information coming in next week’s weekly on this!)

May 8th May Crowning right after 8AM Mass!  It’s going to be a busy day for sure!

May 14th: 8th grade clap out at 3PM.  Our 8th graders will walk the halls one last time on their way out of the door.

May 15th: No School: 8th Graders present their Culminating project; Kindergarten Round Up from 9:30-11:00

May 18th: 8th Grade Mass and Promotion at 6PM in the Church

May 19th : Field Day Kindergarten thru 7th (Please be on the lookout for volunteer sign up.  We need lots of help!).  Last Day of School!  Please consider joining us for Mass, field day or the entire day!

We are looking forward to a wonderful end of the school year!

God Bless,

Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

Break A Leg! Bravo! It's a Showstopper! In the Limelight! That's right, we are getting ready for “Don’t Say No to the U.S.O” and our middle school musical performances coming up this next week.

Each year, we offer a middle school elective for students to perform in a musical. It has become a beloved tradition, with performances ranging from "Beauty and the Beast" to "Into the Woods" to "Annie" and more. This year, over 60 students committed to this endeavor, and rehearsals have been happening since January.  Several teachers are also committed to this work: Mrs. Gimino, Mrs. Claassen, Mr. Rodriguez, Miss Lee and Mrs. Cure. It takes a village!

“Don’t Say No to the U.S.O” will be performed at the following times, and all are welcome at all of the performances:

Community Matinee: May 5th, 1:30 PM

School Matinee: May 6th, 1:30 PM

Evening Performance: May 7th, 7:00PM

A HUGE thank you to PTO and our parents for supporting the musical with important purchases and rentals to pull off a big production!   I can't wait to see it!

God Bless,

Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

Field trip season is here! It’s the time of year when many classes are either heading out on trips or busy planning them. I wanted to share a few helpful reminders as we get underway.

First, thank you to all of you who volunteer your time to support these experiences. We simply could not offer field trips without your willingness to drive and help supervise. Your extra set of eyes helps ensure our students are safe, respectful, and polite. Together, we continue to show what an outstanding community Magdalen Catholic School families are!

When volunteering to drive, please plan to use your own vehicle rather than arranging to ride with another adult. While we understand the desire to coordinate, pre-arranged carpools can create confusion for teachers organizing transportation. As long as we have enough drivers, you are welcome to drive only your own child. Please note that we are unable to accommodate requests for specific student groupings, as this can cause hurt feelings.

As outlined on page 14 of the handbook, please also keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Drivers must be properly insured.
  • Each child must have their own seat belt.
  • For student safety, drivers may not use a cell phone while transporting students or staff. If necessary, please pull over safely or have another adult in the vehicle handle the call.
  • Vehicles should travel directly to and from the field trip location. Side trips, including stops at restaurants, concession stands, or gift shops, are not permitted.
  • For grades K–8, siblings may not attend class field trips. (Siblings are permitted for preschool and Pre-K trips.) This helps ensure a safe and focused experience for all students.

Thank you again for your continued support in making field trips both fun and educational for our students!

God Bless,

Mrs. Patterson

April Friendzy Newsletter

Hello Parents,

Happy Good Friday!  I hope you and your family are enjoying the Easter Triduum and have had the opportunity to participate in the wonderful services our parish offers.  If you haven’t gotten a chance, then I would invite you to attend services on Friday at 3 PM or 7 PM.

I would ask that you keep some of our staff members in your prayers next week.  We have a couple of staff members traveling to Minneapolis to attend the NCEA conference, paid out of our Title funds.  It is an amazing event!  To be with all Catholic school teachers and administrators is such a beautiful sight.  I will be joining this year, while Mr. Allen stays behind and holds down the fort.

Wishing you a Blessed Easter!
Mrs. Patterson

Have a wonderful Spring Break and enjoy some relaxing time with your family.

Hello Parents!

The 4th nine weeks of the school year are peeking at us around the corner. It’s hard to believe we are ¾ of the way through the 2025-2026 school year! The 4th quarter of the school year tends to be one of the busiest

times of year for us. We look forward to welcoming the school children back on March 23rd for a great rest of the school year.

When we return, State Assessment season will be in full swing! We ask for your support from home for best practices to help children be ready to go on the day(s) of the exams. To assist you with this, we will be diligent about posting the dates for the next week's tests in the Weekly. What do we mean by best practices?

Early or on time bedtimes

Nutritious breakfast

No appointments which will cause a child to miss a test

Offer positive commentary only - please do not add to test anxiety with discussion of summer school or threat of retention

No "cramming" at home needed! The teachers will have him/her ready to go.

Communicate with the teacher if it's been a rough night or start to the day

If your child is sick, keep him/her home! We will work with your child when he/she feels better and has returned to school.

Lastly, keep testing in perspective - it's one data point for your child, who has many, many gifts and strengths!

Thanks in advance for your support!

Since we will not have a Mustang Weekly on March 20th, here are the first round of tests:

March 30th: 3B State Reading Assessment;

March 31st : 3B State Reading Assessment; 5th Grade State Science Assessment

April 1st: 5th Grade State Science Assessment

Enjoy your spring break!

Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

Thank you to each of you who took the time to attend one of our listening sessions this week as we continue developing our strategic plan for the next five years. School Council will now begin analyzing both the survey results and the listening session feedback as we work to create this plan. We hope to complete it by the end of the school year and begin implementation in the 2026–2027 school year.

On Wednesday, your child(ren) should have come home with their “Let’s Be Saints Together” T-shirt created for Catholic Schools Week. A special thank you to Mrs. Moore, our 3rd-grade teacher, who designed the shirts for us! Coming to your inbox soon is our all-school photo taken on Wednesday with all of our students proudly wearing their shirts. Surprise! Getting nearly 500 children together in one space—along with all the adults in the building—was quite an accomplishment, and we did it!

As we enter the third quarter, we are focusing on St. Pope John Paul II as we continue striving to be saints together this school year. We are also continuing our work on learner dispositions, with this quarter’s focus being reflect. You’ll find all of our third-quarter winners so far listed in this week’s Mustang Weekly.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hello Parents,

This time of year is always bittersweet for me. As we begin planning for next year and looking ahead with excitement, we also start hearing from some staff members who will not be returning. We are blessed with such an amazing team, and anytime we say goodbye to someone from our Magdalen family, it is hard. This year is no exception.

I would like to share with you the staff members we know of at this time (and hopefully there won’t be any more!) who will not be returning next year:

  • Kellie Bartnick, our current Kindergarten teacher, will be teaching at Holy Spirit in Goddard next year.  Mrs. Bartnick lives out west, and this new school is nearly in her backyard. After making the Magdalen commute for the past five years, she is ready to be closer to home and her babies.
  • Garrett Bolinger, our current 4th grade teacher, has accepted a position as Assistant Director of Worship for the Diocese and will also be coordinating Prayer and Action during the summer months.
  • Nancy Claassen, our Spanish teacher, will be staying home next year to be more involved in the busy schedules of her husband and children.
  • Laure Hocker, our 6th grade English Language Arts teacher, will also be staying home next year and spending more time attending her high school and college daughters’ events.
  • Theresa Lee, our Middle School Science teacher, will be joining the IHM Sisters in August as she pursues God’s calling.
  • Melissa McCandless, our Kindergarten aide, will be staying home next year to be more available to her family.
  • And last, but certainly not least, Mr. Will Allen, our Assistant Principal, has accepted the position of Principal at St. Joseph in Oakley, Kansas. Originally from northwest Kansas, he will be returning home.

We are so grateful to each of these staff members for their dedication and service to our Magdalen community. We have begun advertising and interviewing for each of these positions. Please keep us—and our potential candidates—in your prayers as we work to find the right fits and replacements for Magdalen.

God bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

At our school Mass on Thursday, we were both delighted—and surprised—to receive the Fully Alive Full Formation Distinguished School of Excellence Award. According to the Catholic Advance, this award recognizes schools that focus on educating the whole child—spiritually, physically, intellectually, and emotionally—where every child is safe, healthy, engaged, supported, and challenged.

To apply for this honor, we completed an extensive application addressing several areas: Spiritual Formation, Physical Wellness, Intellectual Growth, Emotional Wellness, Student Engagement, and Challenge to Grow. Our application was submitted back in October, so we have been patiently awaiting word for many months. What a beautiful blessing to receive this Catholic culture award during Catholic Schools Week!

As I followed social media throughout the week and saw other schools being recognized with various awards, I admit I felt a bit discouraged, thinking we may not have received one. That made Thursday’s announcement all the more meaningful and joyful.

This recognition truly reflects the “village” it takes to educate our children in every aspect of their lives. From our priests, to every faculty and staff member in both the school and parish, to our parents and students—we are all walking and working together in mission. Mr. Allen and I are profoundly grateful for the dedication, faith, and commitment each of you brings to our school community.

In the coming days, we will proudly hang our new banner in the school entryway alongside our other award banners, just above the office door. Please be sure to take a moment to notice it the next time you’re in the building—it represents all of us.

God bless,
Jennifer Patterson

Hello Parents!

Each year starting on Epiphany and going through the Feast Day of St. Katharine Drexel (March 3rd), all students in the Catholic Diocese of Wichita learn about St. Katharine Drexel and the life that she lived as part of the Walk in Sisters Shoes campaign.

St. Katharine Drexel was the 2nd American born saint to be canonized by the Catholic Church following St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She was born into wealth, but through the example of her parents she became a brilliant educator and advocate of those less fortunate through spiritual and corporal works of mercy. During a private audience with Pope Leo XIII, he suggested to her that she become a missionary. From the age of 33 until her death, she dedicated her life and fortune. At the time of her death, she had established 50 missions in 16 states for Native Americans.

The St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School fund provides financial support to those parishes that struggle financially to carry out the mission of Catholic education in a parish school. During the Walk in Sisters Shoes campaign, our Magdalen community has the opportunity to donate funds that go directly to support the Catholic schools in our Diocese. Our students participate in a monthly jeans day where we make a donation to a charity and they can wear jeans and a spirit wear shirt. The money collected during the months of January, February, and March go to support this fund as well as the money we collect during Catholic Schools Week.

As a stewardship diocese, it takes all of us to sacrifice in order for our Catholic schools to thrive and be successful. If you feel called to donate to the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School fund I would encourage you to do so during the Walk in Sisters Shoes Campaign. God Bless,

Hello Parents,

In just two weeks, we will be celebrating some very special moments here at Magdalen Catholic School! Because so much is happening, this week’s Principal’s Corner will focus on these upcoming celebrations. Next week’s corner will return to highlighting other important events and updates around the school.

On the horizon, we have MCS Fest Week, Catholic Schools Week, and the beautiful milestone of our second graders receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each of these moments is deeply connected to our mission as a Catholic school and offers us an opportunity to come together in faith and community.

Most importantly, we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, through which our students encounter God’s merciful and forgiving grace. As our second graders prepare for their first experience of this sacrament on February 1, I ask that you please keep them in your prayers.

“Oh my God, without You I can do nothing. You have told me, “Ask and you shall receive.” In full confidence in Your promise, therefore, I beg You to accept the confession I am about to make and grant me true contrition for my many offenses. Savior of the world who gave Yourself to the death of the cross to save sinners, look with mercy on me, a sinner. Regard not my wickedness in such a manner to forget Your pardon. For my offenses I deserve condemnation, but presuming upon the ransom of Your blood, I ask forgiveness. Heal my wounds, Lord Jesus. Send the light of Your truth into my soul so that I may worthily confess my shortcomings. Give me a contrite heart and true sorrow for my offenses. Although I am unworthy of Your love, because of it I come to You for forgiveness. Have mercy on me, O Lord, have mercy! Amen.”.

From January 26–31, we will also celebrate Catholic Schools Week, a time to reflect on and rejoice in our mission. This week highlights the many ways we prepare children for the Sacraments while nurturing their daily faith formation within our classrooms and Church. We are proud of our mission to accompany families, grow disciples, and inspire lifelong learning. Through prayer, Mass, Adoration, Confession, and intentional faith integration across subjects, we strive to help each child build a personal relationship with God. Please join us in praying for our school community and for our continued partnership in forming our children in faith.

“O God, we ask You to help our schools do their work in Your name. Bound by charity to one another may we be penetrated by an apostolic spirit, which reaches out to all the faculty, staff, and administrators in our schools, joined in this ministry of Catholic education. We ask You to help them give witness to Christ, the unique teacher, by their lives as well as by their teachings. May all the students and families of our schools follow Your example and be generous, pure, respectful, and sincere and find You the prophet of truth and love, the companion and friend of all, present and active in their lives. Amen.”

Finally, MCS Fest Week (January 26–February 1) beautifully complements these celebrations. First and foremost, MCS Fest is a celebration of community—a time to come together in support of one another and our shared mission. Whether through participating in the online auction or joining us for an evening of fellowship on January 31, this week reflects the joy of gathering as one school family. I invite you to pray for our community as we celebrate, support, and uplift one another.

“Good and gracious God, we recognize all life is a gift and a blessing. We thank you for your most generous love. Encourage us to be persons of honesty and integrity, worthy of proclaiming the Gospel, in this sacred ministry of fundraising. Help us to always reverence the sacred space where our donors and our missions meet. Give us openness to listen to the needs of our donors. Give us joyful spirits, and an eagerness to engage others. Give us hopeful imagination and creative vision, recognizing generosity in even the smallest gift. Give us strong, steadfast hearts in times of discouragement. Give us trusting hearts, knowing that the fruits of labor will be realized long after we are gone. Give us faithful hearts, deeply committed to Your realm. Let us feel Your Presence so that we know we are never truly alone. Remind us always that what we do for the least of our sisters and brothers, we do for you. We ask this in Jesus’ name and in unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

God bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Friendzy Unit 5 Parent Letter

Happy 3rd Sunday of Advent!

Anyone else in disbelief that 1st semester ends next Friday with a Noon dismissal? What a fast...very, very fast...first half of the year. Together, as the Magdalen family, we've prayed, worshipped, celebrated, problem solved, collaborated, united, and learned together! I'd say that's pretty impressive for a semester together. I hope everyone experiences a blessed remainder of Advent, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! We hope you enjoy your family time and break from the routine of school. 2nd semester begins on Tuesday, January 7th.

IMPORTANT: If you have not already completed your stewardship packet, please fill it out. It’s all online! This is mandatory paperwork to be considered for sponsorship by the Parish at either Magdalen Catholic School or Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Families will not receive their Pre-Registration paperwork for 2026-2027 school year until completed. Thank you!

During the holidays and school break, there will be many opportunities to pray together as a family at mealtimes~ breakfast, lunch and dinner! Looking for some ways to expand on your mealtime prayers? Consider the following suggestions: Start with Silence: Try 15 - 30 seconds of quiet time before saying your prayer together Bless Your Family: Beside blessing the food, you can also ask for God's blessing on your family and your conversation. Pray after the meal: You can either pray before everyone is excused or, if you want to keep it simple, encourage your children to say a quiet prayer and do the sign of the cross. Offer a menu of prayers: Use Table Triangles as aids to learning new mealtime prayers Let the kids lead: Mealtime prayer is an excellent time to teach children how to lead prayer!

God Bless your family during this holiday season!

Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

This week, we recognized Vocation Awareness Week. "National Vocation Awareness Week, celebrated November 2-8, 2025, is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on January 13 in 2013. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November" (from https://www.usccb.org/committees/clergy-consecrated-life-vocations/national-vocation-awareness-week). It's also a great week to remember that we don't need to leave these important discussions to one week only! Have you asked your child lately about what they may consider their vocation? Have you inquired if a son or daughter has ever thought about a vocation to the clergy or religious life? Do you pray for your child's vocation? We encourage our parents to check in with their children to see where they may be in discernment and what's on their hearts!

What an honor it was to recognize our Veterans at Tuesday's 8:00 AM Mass for their service to our country! Thank you to all who attended. Also, we have several others to acknowledge for helping us to make it a special morning. Andrew Mulkey for talking to the children about military service, Mrs. Jacki Gimino for special music, our Student Leadership Team for assisting with the reception and a presentation for the Veterans, and lastly, our Middle School team of teachers who coordinated the entire event. A wonderful team effort by the Magdalen family to show our love and support for Veterans!

This will be our last Mustang Weekly before Thanksgiving Break.  Once we return from Thanksgiving Break, it is a fast moving few weeks to our Christmas Break. Here are some important dates to note!

December 3: December Jeans Day

December 8: NO SCHOOL: Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Holy Day of Obligation)

December 12: Our Lady of Guadalupe 8:00 AM Mass

December 16: AR Reward Day

December 19: End of 2nd quarter: NOON dismissal

God Bless,

Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,

Wishing all of our Magdalen families a blessed and joy-filled Thanksgiving! As we pause to reflect on the many gifts God has given us, please know how grateful we are for each of you and the partnership we share in guiding and forming your children. Your support, trust, and collaboration are true blessings to our school community.

Advent is almost here! We begin the season on Sunday, November 30th, and our staff has put together an AMAZING challenge for students to help them prepare for Jesus’s coming and deepen their relationship with the Father. Each week, students will focus on one of our schoolwide learner dispositions, and we’ll be sending home suggestions for how they can practice that disposition throughout the week.

During the first week of Advent, we will focus on Perseverance. Students can demonstrate perseverance by choosing from a variety of activities, such as participating in the Hallow Challenge, leading their family in daily Advent prayers around the wreath, reading an entire book of the Bible, spending 30 minutes in Adoration, praying a rosary, completing a nine-day novena, or reading a book about a saint.

At the end of each week, students will show their completed challenge card to their teacher to receive that week’s bead. After receiving the bead, they will place it in the designated jar in front of the school office inside our Advent wreath display. Students may earn only one bead per week, even if they complete multiple activities. Students in Pre-K through 4th grade must complete at least one challenge per week to earn their bead, while students in 5th–8th grade must complete two or more.

Your child’s Advent challenge card will be coming home with them on Monday and a copy of it has been included in this week’s Mustang Weekly.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Patterson
