Hello Parents!
Thank you to all of you who made our SMART Families presentation a priority this week. It was amazing to see so many of you in attendance.
The information presented to all of us offered several valuable takeaways, especially regarding the risks of giving children access to smart technology too early. One of the most eye-opening points was the reminder that a child’s brain is not fully developed until around age 25, which means the decisions we make now about technology use can have long-term effects on their emotional, social, and cognitive development. As mentioned in both presentations, if you are interested in taking the SMART Family pledge and didn’t get a chance to do it on Wednesday, here is the link to sign up: https://www.smart-families.org/smart-pledge.
On November 18th and 19th, SMART Families will return to our school to present grade-level, content-specific sessions to all students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. These presentations are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, providing valuable insights on navigating technology safely and responsibly.
If you're looking to continue building meaningful family time, I encourage you to sign up for the Tech-Free event happening this Sunday after the 4:30 Mass. Families will enjoy dinner, fellowship, and fun—without any screens. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be present and truly connect with one another. If you’d like to attend, please contact Mr. Allen at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will still take you!

Hello Parents,
Over the past couple of weeks, several parents have reached out asking for an update on campus security and any changes that have been made or are being considered. Please know that the safety and security of our students are top priorities for Fr. Marstall, the administration, and our staff. As I often remind people, both administrators have children in the building as well—we are deeply committed to keeping our campus as safe as possible.
We already have a number of security measures in place on both the church and school sides. Some of these details aren’t shared publicly to avoid compromising the safety of our students and staff. However, I can share that we continue to lock the doors during 8 AM Mass, with a dedicated staff member stationed in the Gathering Space while students are in the church. We also remain diligent about monitoring who enters the building and continue to conduct regular safety drills—fire, tornado, and crisis response—to ensure we are prepared for any situation.
When making updates to our security plan, we are careful to consider all perspectives and focus on sustainable, long-term improvements rather than reactive decisions made out of fear. While we cannot live in fear because of the actions of others, we can take thoughtful steps to strengthen our safety measures.
At this time, we—along with several other Diocesan schools—are working with a grant writing company to apply for multiple safety and security grants. These grants will help us explore enhancements such as upgraded camera systems, additional riot glass on windows and doors, improved exterior lighting, and other measures designed to make our campus even safer.
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
The pumpkins are here! The pumpkins are here! The excitement from the students as they see the pumpkins for the 1st time is one to witness. They talk about their favorites and which character is what. They strategize with their friends on how much they think each pumpkin will weigh. It is definitely a sight to behold. I’ve included pictures of this year's pumpkin family!
For those of you new to our school, each October we have an event called The Great Pumpkin. A group of students, with help from some of our very talented teachers, paints the pumpkins to look like characters from our theme. Each year, the students try to guess and figure out each of the pumpkin characters and the theme for the year.
The students are trying to figure out the total weight of all the pumpkins combined. Accessories such as hats, hands, eyes, etc., don’t count in the total weight. Each student gets a free guess, and then they may purchase more guesses from their teacher for a suggested donation of $.25 or 5 guesses for $1.00. The student or students who guess the correct weight win a cash prize!
All of the guesses are entered into our drawing for prizes! Thanks to your generous contributions, we have a variety of prizes to give away at our Great Pumpkin Assembly on October 30th at 1:30 PM in the Parish Hall. If you are available, please join us! All of the money we raise during The Great Pumpkin goes to fund our Catholic Schools Week and other PTO activities.

Hello Magdalen Parents,
This year, we are celebrating 40 Years of Stewardship in the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. It’s hard to believe that Stewardship has been around this long! As a product of the Diocese of Wichita, I think those of us who have been around it for most of our lives can sometimes take for granted the amazing impact Stewardship has on our Diocese and our lives. The seeds of Wichita’s stewardship model were planted in the late 1960s. A key figure was Monsignor Thomas McGread at St. Francis of Assisi parish, who challenged parishioners to give 5% of their income to the parish to cover its needs—including schools. Later, he proposed 8% as a standard that could sustain high school tuition and even building projects without special drives or fundraisers. Where would we be today had Msgr. McGread had not had the vision to introduce this way of life to us.
We will be celebrating the Stewardship way of life throughout the whole school year. Each month, I have challenged our faculty and staff to focus and highlight some aspect of Stewardship while also emphasizing the four pillars of Stewardship! We’ve talked as a faculty about how important it is for our kids to realize how truly blessed they are to be in the Wichita Diocese and receive their Catholic education. I think many of us tend to forget the sacrifices made so our children can work towards becoming disciples of Jesus.
One of the school initiatives we are working on is to give 40,000 prayers of thanks for the 40 years of Stewardship. Through our partnership with Hallow, students have been using the app to pray a multitude of prayers throughout the school year so far. As of today, we have prayed over 6,500 prayers! We have a tracker going outside the office. The next time you are in the building, I encourage you to stop by and check it out to see how close we are to our goal!
What can you do as a family to celebrate this great milestone in our Diocese? Talk with your children about the gift Catholic education is to them. Explain to them that without Stewardship, many of our families wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition to attend our schools. Participate in Stewardship as a family. Pray together. Volunteer at the Lord’s Diner. Go to Mass as a family. The opportunities are endless! Let’s work together to make sure Stewardship is alive for at least the next 40 years!
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
While attending Mass last weekend, you may have had the opportunity to listen to Fr. Marstall preach about the generous contributions our families make to support schools that lack the financial resources we are so blessed to have here at Magdalen Catholic School. One of the entities that Fr. Marstall highlighted was Support for Catholic schools.
Support for Catholic Schools was created because of a law passed in 2014 that established a Low-Income Student Scholarship program. This program creates $10 Million dollars in tax credits available to individuals who donate money to one of the qualifying institutions. Support for Catholic Schools is the scholarship granting organization that the Catholic Diocese created to be eligible for the credit. All 38 schools in the Catholic Diocese have benefitted from this tax credit program, including Magdalen!
How does the credit work? For every dollar donated to Support for Catholic Schools (SCS), you get a 75% tax credit. This information didn’t make much sense to me until it was explained that it was like a coupon. If you give $1000 to SCS, then you will get a coupon for $750 to use when paying your taxes. This is a great way to make a charitable contribution while receiving the benefit for yourself by reducing your tax bill to the state!
If you are interested in learning more about this program, I highly recommend you check out their website, https://supportforcatholicschools.org/tax-credit-program/. Their website will not only give you more information on donating, but it will also allow you to see how many tax credits are still available for the calendar year.
Have a blessed weekend!

Hello Parents,
Our first round of field trips is set to begin next week! Students are excited to go out into the public for an educational experience. With field trips, comes a few reminders that we’d like to share with everyone. We are so grateful for our parents who volunteer to accompany and drive on these trips with our students.
The field trip driver’s primary responsibilities are the supervision and safety of children. The driver should be cognizant, at all times, of the children’s location and activities. We respectfully request that supervisors do not become distracted while socializing with other parents on the trip. We also request drivers to set a good example for the students by being respectful to individuals providing the experience at the field trip sites. Here are a few additional reminders from our Parent and Student handbook:
- Drivers must be properly insured
- There must be one seat belt per child
- For the safety of our students, drivers may not use a cell phone while driving students and/or employees. If a cell phone needs to be used, the driver must pull over and stop or let another adult in the car use the phone.
- Students are assigned vehicle and driver placement going to and from the event. The driver is given a list of assigned students. Parents may not request their child to ride in a specific car or with a specific student.
- Each vehicle proceeds directly to the site of the field trip and returns directly to school with no side trips or stops at fast food restaurants, etc. Similarly, please do not patron concession stands or gift shops while on the field trip.
- Driver must have attended a Virtus Training Session and be registered with the Diocese of Wichita
- In grades K-8, siblings are not allowed to go on class field trips. In pre-school and pre-kindergarten, siblings are allowed to go on class field trips. We want to ensure the safest experience for the students.
We hope that this helps parents to assist the teacher with management of the students in the best possible way during the field trip.
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
By the time you read this letter, I will be wrapping up 2 days of retreat with our 7th-grade girls at Camp Kapaun. We’ve heard a lot about Camp Kapaun the past year, as it is a direct result of the Diocesan Capital Campaign that is currently underway. I am by no means a camper. My idea of roughing it is staying at a Holiday Inn, but I do have to say, Camp Kapaun is amazing!
This retreat started last spring with our 7th and 8th graders. This year we are taking our 7th graders. Mrs. Bolinger, Mrs. Degenhardt, Fr. Marco, and I, along with several mom chaperones, are accompanying these girls on this adventure! Girls were this week, and our boys will be next Thursday and Friday with Mr. Allen, Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Bolinger, Fr. Marstall and many dad chaperones. This retreat experience offers our students the opportunity to step away from the distractions of society and be kids again, surrounded by the beauty of nature and our faith. They spend time in adoration, confession, Mass, witness talks, and small group conversations, just to name a few activities. To see them grow in their faith through this experience is a remarkable transformation.
We also incorporate team-building activities and provide downtime for our team members. They can explore the trails through the woods, canoe and fish on the lake, play games, and just hang out with one another.
Will you continue to pray for our girls as they wrap up their retreat and say a special prayer for the boys, too, that they will have a fruitful experience and grow in their relationship with each other and with Jesus.
Have a blessed weekend!

Hello Parents,
It seems a little crazy that October is right around the corner. Even more so, we are starting the conversation about Parent-Teacher Conferences! We can't wait to welcome our parents to conferences on October 16th. Please watch for the Sign-Up Genius to come out for scheduling purposes in next week's Mustang Weekly. Conferences are required, and we feel this is an important time for conversations and check-ins after the first quarter of the school year. In a day when so much communication is electronic, facetime and the ability to converse in person feel critical to our partnership. Each conference, from Preschool through 5th grade, lasts 15 minutes and will be held in the individual classrooms. Middle School conferences will be held in the cafeteria. Middle School parents will sign up for a 40-minute slot. During this time, you will get the opportunity to visit with any of the Middle School teachers you wish to speak with. All specialist teachers (Music, Art, PE, Technology, Library, and Tier) will be available in their individual rooms for you to stop by and have a conversation with them about your student.
If for some reason, you can't physically attend the conference, as opposed to asking for an alternative date, we would be open to a Google Meet or phone conference. We ask that you please coordinate this with your child’s teacher. Thank you in advance for respecting the allotted day and teachers' time.
As we begin to prepare for conferences, I ask you to pray for your child(ren)'s teachers. Lord, I pray (teacher’s name) will seek you for wisdom. Help ______ to rely on you for instruction and direction every day. When ________ needs help, he/she will be willing to ask and receive support. Guide ______ to see challenges as opportunities for growth and to see creative ways to bless his/her students and community. I pray ________ will be filled and led by the Holy Spirit. Set _______’s feet on the path that honors you. Open ______’s heart to continue to lead by example, creating an atmosphere where all are welcomed.
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Families,
This year, we are combining our theme, “Let’s Be Saints Together,” with the learning dispositions we are studying. Faculty and staff will be on the lookout each quarter to identify students who exhibit the learning dispositions we have identified during that quarter.
In the 1st quarter of the school year, students are working to grow in the virtue of perseverance. Our school is holding up St. Joan of Arc as a model of perseverance. When students are “caught” by teachers and staff persevering like Joan at school, they can claim a small prize in the office for their efforts. Below are the students who persevered in August!
Kindergarten
Gerard M., Annie W., Molly C., Robbie H., Sawyer V., Beckham Z., Connor C.
1st Grade
Easton V., Maizy E., Hadley H., Lucas G.
2nd Grade
Huck R., Remi G., Gigi V.
3rd Grade
Catie L., Ethan S., Brooks H.
4th Grade
Emma H.
5th Grade
Rallie D., Taylor S., Son Phong P., Penelope W.
6th Grade
Jacob S., Ethan B., Phoebe D., Logan C., Hannah C.
7th Grade
Miles B., Will E., Carter S.
We are excited to continue this initiative throughout the school year! At the end of each month, we will highlight those students who exhibited our learning dispositions so be on the lookout for those!

Hello Magdalen Parents,
I would like to send along a few reminders regarding drop-off and pick-up on our campus. With the start of the school year well underway, there are several things that have been noticed or reported to our staff. Mr. Allen and I have been out at both drop-off and pick-up this week. Anytime you are on campus, please be sure to have your parking tag hanging in your rearview mirror. Starting next week, staff will be stopping cars to remind those without a tag.
In the mornings, if you are dropping off in zone 2 (the free moving lane), please pull all the way up to the end of the drop-off lane. This lane ends in front of the curved sidewalk, and kids are more than welcome to get out there and walk to the front of the school. If you choose to use zone 3 and park to drop off your child, then please be sure to stay to the right-hand side when entering or exiting this parking lot. If you need to help your child get out of the car, their seat belt, or get their belongings, then you need to use zone 3 as well.
Beginning next week, we are asking all parents to leave their kids at the doors during drop off. I know it can be a comfort to you to walk them all the way to their classrooms, but one of our goals is for them to become independent with this task. We have tons of staff members stationed throughout the hallways that will make sure your child makes it to their classroom. Thank you for your help with this task.
During pick up, just a reminder that zone 3 AND zone 4 are BOTH locked down starting at 3:15 and ending at 3:30. This is for the safety of our children. Please do not argue with our staff members when they are trying to remind you about the parking lot being locked down. They are helping everyone to learn the rules of our zones. Also, if you should arrive after we lock down the parking lot, then you will need to proceed to zone 2 to pick up your children. Once in zone 2, a staff member will be able to help get the children to you from zone 4. ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS NEED TO BE IN THEIR CAR BY 3:27. This ensures that everyone is safely in their vehicles prior to cars moving.
When using zone 2, whether due to being late or this being your normal pick-up spot, please use BOTH sides of the pick-up lanes to park. Many times, we have lots of open spots on the east side pick-up lane. Please stay in your vehicle and let the kids come to your car. Kids get in on the sidewalk or grass side. (Never near the middle lane.) Kids keep all their belongings with them when they get in the car. Do not open the trunk or hatch for kids to put backpacks in.
*MIDDLE LANE HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY and needs to stay moving. When there is a break in the traffic flow, the outside lanes can merge into the middle lane. (The car nearest the crosswalk will go first, and then cars behind them will follow.)
Thank you for your help and cooperation as we work together. When we have almost 500 kids dismissing at the same time, our number 1 priority is safety. Please keep this in mind as you are driving on campus by being patient with the process and not being distracted by your cell phones. We also appreciate you sharing this information with any other individual who will be dropping off or picking up.
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
It was great to see the students back in the hallways on Wednesday and Thursday, even if it was for a shorter time. We are excited to welcome 7th and 8th grade as well as our preschool and afternoon PreK students next week.
Every year before the office closes for the summer, Mr. Allen and I spend a considerable amount of time going through the handbook and making any necessary changes and adjustments for the next school year. I thought it would be important to highlight the parts of the handbook we tend to refer to the most and get the most questions about. I would highly encourage you to take the time to familiarize yourself with our handbook if you haven’t gotten a chance to do it. The handbook can always be found on the main page of the school website as well as the student agenda book. We have also placed a “Handbook Updates At A Glance” document on the website too.
With the longer weekend on the horizon, it’s a good time to remind you of our haircut policy in case you didn’t get a chance to get a fresh haircut before school started. For the girls, they cannot have extreme or distracting hairstyles or colors. Color must be a natural hair color. Ombre and balayage are considered to be distracting colors. No hair attachments or extensions. The boys’ hair may not touch the collar of the shirt nor touch the eyebrows or top of the ears. No extreme or distracting hairstyles or colors. No faux hawk or spiked hair. No designs shaved into the hair. No shaved heads. Hair must be a natural hair color, and all boys must be clean shaven.
One of the new policies we have that will affect the older students the most is our no cellphone policy. Students will no longer be allowed to use their cellphones after school while they are waiting to be picked up. Their cellphones must remain in their backpacks until they are in the car. Cellphones being used prior to students getting into their cars will be taken to the office where a parent must pick it up.
The other change that is important is our new policy for shorts. The only shorts that will be allowed to be worn during the school day or during free dress days are navy blue uniform shorts.
Thank you for the partnership we have with you. Our students look so sharp when they arrive in dress code. I look forward to having a wonderful year at Magdalen Catholic School!
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents!
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! It sure seemed like we had the fastest summer ever, but I am so very excited to have the faculty and staff back in the building. I’m really looking forward to having the kids return next week (probably not as much as you are!). The building is just too quiet without the hustle and bustle of the students being here.
Each week, we will be sending out our Mustang Weekly on Fridays at noon. This newsletter is a great way for you to be in the know of what is going on in the school! PLEASE PLEASE read it! We try to pack as much information as possible in the newsletter thus allowing us to send fewer messages throughout the week.
If you haven’t gotten a chance to review our Student/Parent handbook, I would encourage you to do so. There is a link to it on the front page of our website. Also, we have added a “Handbook at a Glance” document to make it easier for you to navigate the changes.
Please be on the lookout early next week for a messenger that includes everything you need to know about our drop off and pick up procedures. It is important that everyone understands how this process works for the safety of our students.
We warmly welcome you into the school for your child’s first day! There is something special about seeing them in their new space and starting to get settled. Make sure to take lots of pictures! After their first day, we ask that you allow them to walk into school by themselves. We will have multiple staff members at the doors to greet them and help them navigate the halls should they need assistance. Please let us know if your child seems to be struggling with this and we can provide them with a little extra TLC!
God Bless!

Hello Parents,
It’s hard to believe that next week will be our last Mustang Weekly for this school year. We will also be sharing our summer letter next week. This summer letter will have a wide variety of information in it from the happenings for the last week of school to summer office hours and even information about registration in June! It’s the time of year when we have one foot out the door for the current school year and another foot standing at the door of the 2025-2026 school year.
We want to wish a special congratulations to both our 8th graders and our Magdalen Catholic School alumni who will be graduating from high school this year! Both classes have succeeded and accomplished so much in their years at school. We will be celebrating the seniors on Wednesday, May 14th at 3:00 as they walk the halls of Magdalen in their cap and gown. Then on Thursday, our 8th graders will walk the halls of Magdalen for the last time with their clap out at 3:00. If you are able to join us for either or both of these events, please do! It’s such an amazing sight to see the littles looking up to these two groups of students!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms! We hope you enjoy your weekend and that your children spoil you with love and affection. Thank you to the mom’s for all they do for our students.

Hello Parents,
Break A Leg! Bravo! It's a Showstopper! In the Limelight! That's right, we are getting ready for “Aladdin” and our middle school musical performances coming up this next week.
Each year, we offer a middle school elective for students to perform in a musical. It has become a beloved tradition, with performances ranging from "Beauty and the Beast" to "Into the Woods" to "Annie" and more. This year, over 120 students committed to this endeavor, a new record of participants, and rehearsals have been happening since January. Several teachers are also committed to this work: Mrs. Gimino, Mrs. Claassen, Mr. Rodriguez, Miss Lee and Mrs. Cure. It takes a village!
“Aladdin” will be performed at the following times, and all are welcome at all of the performances:
Community Matinee: May 6th, 1:30 PM
School Matinee: May 7th, 1:30 PM
Evening Performance: May 6th, 7:00PM
Evening Performance: May 8th, 7:00 PM
A HUGE thank you to PTO and our parents for supporting the musical with important purchases and rentals to pull off a big production! I can't wait to see it!

Hello Parents,
Staff Appreciation Week is May 5th-9th. We are very blessed at Magdalen by our entire team: teachers, aides, office, maintenance, cafeteria and the church office. It takes a village and ours is really special!
If you are able, we encourage you to write a note of support this week to those you’d like to acknowledge and show appreciation. In our world, emails often deal with issues or problems, so what a delight it is to receive positive and encouraging ones!
In next week’s Mustang Weekly, we will have several sign-ups available for you to help us make our appreciation week even more special. We will be asking for help with recess duty on Wednesday, May 7th and for you to send gift cards in to shower the staff with a small token of appreciation.
While Staff Appreciation is the Week of May 5th, we also have many other activities going on in May as well. Here are a few important dates you might want to put on your family calendar:
May 2nd: MCS Gala Team Wars! Students may wear jeans or school uniform shorts along with KU shirt or MCS spirit wear
May 6th, 7th and 8th: Middle School Musical (more detailed information coming in next week’s weekly on this!)
May 9th: Principal/Vice Principal for the Day! May Crowning right after 8AM Mass! It’s going to be a busy day for sure!
May 15th: 8th grade clap out at 3PM
May 16th: No School: 8th Graders present their Culminating project; Kindergarten Round Up from 9:30-11:00
May 19th: 8th Grade Mass and Promotion at 6PM in the Church
May 20st: Field Day Kindergarten thru 7th (Please be on the lookout for volunteer sign up. We need lots of help!)
May 21st : Last day of school! 10AM Dismissal
We are looking forward to a wonderful end of the school year!
God Bless,
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
Happy Good Friday! I hope you and your family are enjoying the Easter Triduum and have gotten an opportunity to participate in the wonderful services our parish has to offer. If you haven’t gotten a chance, then I would invite you to attend services on Friday at 3 PM or 7 PM.
I would ask that you keep some of our staff members in your prayers next week. We have 5 members traveling to Orlando to attend the NCEA conference paid out of our Title funds. I have attended this conference for the past 3 years with members of our staff and it is an amazing event. To be with all Catholic school teachers and administrators is such a beautiful sight. Mr. Allen will be joining our staff members this year while I stay back and hold the fort down.
Wishing you a Blessed Easter!
Mrs. Patterson

Hello Parents,
State Assessments are in full swing here at Magdalen! The testing window opened on March 24th and will close on April 25th. Our 3rd through 8th graders are working hard to show us what they know during this time. The State Assessment tests themselves have been revamped this year as well. The State has written new questions; thus, this year will be the year that the baseline is set for future years. Usually, we get results from the state in mid to late May, but we don’t anticipate having results this year before the end of school.
What does that mean for summer tutoring for 3rd-8th graders? Students will NOT be required for summer tutoring based on their state assessment results. Just like students in K through 2nd, they CAN still be required for their AIMS web scores or missing too many days of school. All of our students will be taking the AIMS web test starting the week of April 28th.
There are a couple of exciting end-of-the-year activities that we are gearing up for. On May 15th, we will have our annual Spring Fling at Wichita Sports Forum (Aviate). We have rented out the entire building just for Magdalen! If you are looking for a way to get involved, we are looking for an individual to shadow our current chair and take over the planning of this event next year. It’s a SUPER easy way and takes minimal time. Let me know if you want to volunteer!
Field day is back again this year! It will be held on Tuesday, May 20th. This is a full day of activities for students of all grade levels! Look out for a signup soon to help with this event. Parents are welcome to join us for all or part of the day!
Finally, mark your summer calendars for June 24th (noon to 5 PM) and 25th(7 AM to Noon). We will be moving school registration to the beginning of the summer instead of the end. During this time, you can shop the used uniform sale and pay your fees. No worries if you already have plans to be out of town, as the registration itself is all online through your PowerSchool parent account.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Patterson
