Have you ever observed a one-year-old child study a painting of the Last Supper? Have you ever witnessed a five-year-old child properly identify articles of the Mass and prepare the altar? Have you ever experienced joy in seeing a child converse silently with the Holy Spirit?
What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is religious formation for the youngest child based on the educational principles of Maria Montessori. An environment (called the atrium) is prepared especially for children containing materials on the life of Jesus, his teachings, the liturgy, and sacraments, to aid in the development of the spiritual life. The adult catechist and the child enter into a shared experience through selected presentations of scripture and liturgy, and the children are called forth deeper through their personal work.
