Structure and Internal Components of Our Discipleship Center

April 25, 2025

Easter is a great time to establish or renew our discipleship. We're making great progress on our Discipleship Center! This will be a place for adults to encounter the Lord in others who are striving to live as His disciples. You can really start to see the structure coming together! The HVAC components, the steel scaffolding, the widow structures, the roof tiles. All are in place and work will be continuing as planned. We are so grateful for all those who made gifts to our For the Greater Glory of God Capital Campaign that have made the Discipleship Center possible.

Discipleship Center Construction Update

March 28, 2025

I hope you have had the opportunity to observe the construction of the Discipleship Center. I feel so blessed to be so close to the building project. Positioned right across from the offices, we get to watch it rise, piece by piece. Well, not every piece. 😊 It's been equally enjoyable to see others delight in watching the construction activity. It's truly inspiring to see a building designed for such a noble purpose take shape, thanks to the generous stewardship of so many parishioners.

I am just as excited about the purpose of this building. The Discipleship Center will be dedicated to the evangelization and faith formation of adult disciples. I like to say that the building on the north side of the campus is our kids' Catholic School, and the Discipleship Center will be our "adult Catholic school." I write these words with humor, yet with a serious undertone.

There is no greater need in the Catholic Church right now than to make adults into faithful, on-fire disciples of Christ through evangelization, spiritual friendship, and faith formation. The bond of spiritual friendship is rooted in the love of God through imitating His Son and following Him together as disciples on The Way. Awesome times lie ahead for our parish and parishioners! Your generosity is both pleasing and blessed in the eyes of God.

Ad majorem Dei gloriam,

Fr. John F. Jirak, Pastor

Discipleship Center Taking Shape

February 7, 2025

Steel work has begun and you can start to see the outlines of how the building will take shape. Fr. Jirak says that this physical construction parallels the spiritual construction we are undertaking as parish. As we commit to new priorities, such as building next-level adult discipleship, we are in essence, building something far more complex and enduring than any physical structure. We are building a home where we can strive together toward being missionary disciples, and that's pretty exciting!

Progress on the Discipleship Center

December & January

Don’t be surprised when you see the temporary barricade wall down the hall in front of the parish office. It will only be up for a few months to keep us safe, clean, and warm while they’re working on the Discipleship Center. They even made us a plexiglass window so we can watch the progress!

The steel is arriving and parts of the facade have been removed. It’s so exciting to see the progress being made! Thank you to all our stewards who have made sacrificial gifts to make this next chapter at Magdalen possible. We are grateful for your generosity!

We're Breaking Ground on the Discipleship Center

November 1, 2024

May the Lord give you peace! This Sunday, November 3, we will have our groundbreaking ceremony for the Discipleship Center. The Discipleship Center is the Tier 2 Project from our Capital Campaign. It is because of your generosity and sacrifices that this project is happening. We are all grateful. Here are a few renderings to give you an idea of what it will look like upon completion:

I am often asked, what's the Discipleship Center for? What's the purpose of the building? The targeted group for the use of the Discipleship Center is anyone 18 years of age or older—namely, our adults. The purpose of the building is to create a space that promotes living out one's relationship with God at the next level.

Living out one’s relationship with God at the next level requires a discipline that goes beyond fulfilling requirements focused on avoiding mortal sin, such as attending Mass each Sunday and going to confession once per year. Rather, the disciplines of discipleship are directed toward growing into a burning hot spiritual life. One of the saddest realities of the Catholic faith over the last fifty years has been the reduction of living one's faith to fulfilling basic requirements, similar to the conditions of being a good citizen through obeying laws and paying one's taxes.

The wonderful teaching of the Catholic faith is that faith is a journey of going from good to better and that there are actual stages in the spiritual life. Once one embarks upon living out a serious relationship with God, there are three stages through which a person normally passes. The first stage, the stage for beginners, is called the Purgative Way. In the Purgative Way, the focus of one's spiritual activities is directed to overcoming sin and resisting sinful temptations. Consequently, we often see very radical penances and fasting in the lives of the saints when they began to live their spiritual life with intensity. Think of St. Ignatius of Loyola living in a cave for some years.

The second stage of the spiritual life is the Illuminative Way for those who are advanced. These individuals live out their intense relationship with the Lord by focusing on growth in good habits, i.e., virtues. This includes growth in the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, along with the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. They still work on overcoming certain sins, but their preoccupation is building virtue.

The third stage of the spiritual life is the Unitive Way for those who are “perfect” or complete. The primary spiritual activities of these disciples are dwelling with God and experiencing gladness in Him. Again, they still perform acts directed to overcoming sin and growing in virtue; however, their preoccupation is just being with God, and they strive to dwell with Him wherever they might find themselves.

Whether one finds oneself in the Purgative, Illuminative, or Unitive Way, discipleship means living that stage with intensity. The Discipleship Center will be a space for people to come to live and share this way of discipleship together, for it is not possible to live out discipleship without spiritual friendship.

Chiller Installation

October 10, 2024

Your Capital Campaign dollars are at work! This week we received our new chillers, which are basically humongous air conditioners. They circulate a chilled water and glycol mixture that are pumped through the air handlers throughout the entire facility, both the church and the school.

The chillers are one of the main Tier 1 Projects of the Capital Campaign. While the crew is here, they're also prepping the HVAC plumbing for the Discipleship Center, our Tier 2 Project. THANK YOU to all our stewards who made sacrificial gifts to our Capital Campaign. Here are some photos of the installation!

Discipleship Center Update

October 6, 2024

May the Lord give you peace!

Last Tuesday, I received a letter from the Vicar General of the Diocese, Fr. David Lies, stating that we are free to begin purchasing steel for the Discipleship Center. We are unofficially hoping to break ground at the end of October or early November. It is truly surreal to see what is possible when parishioners practice sacrificial stewardship, which not only brings personal joy but also yields abundant fruit for the parish. The Discipleship Center has been designed to create a homelike atmosphere that encourages adults to invest themselves in being disciples and making missionary disciples. Ultimately, discipleship involves stages of awakening, accompanying, and igniting parishioners in spiritual friendship with one another and with the Lord.

The word "awaken" refers to the first step in the discipleship journey. Before a person can enter into a flourishing relationship with the Lord, they need to be awakened and attracted to the truth, beauty, and goodness of this relationship. Jesus proclaimed the preeminence of this relationship so that we might have life and have it to the fullest (John 10:10).

Unfortunately, not many people experience this life and fullness. Why? Because it is not automatically given and is certainly not magic. God desires a burning union with us through the virtue of Charity. This virtue, Divine love, is bestowed upon us in baptism. It elevates our human nature for Divine participation and creates a vital bond between us and God. However, as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "this intimate and vital bond of man to God can be forgotten, overlooked, or even explicitly rejected by man" (CCC, 29).

When I was young, there was a spirit among my peers and some elders of rejecting any conversation about one’s relationship to God. There was an unwritten rule that you do not talk about personal faith, and most people simply had an aversion to it. Expressing faith outside of church was embarrassing for many. I experienced this attitude all around me and would not want to experience it again. Thankfully, this is not the problem I observe today, especially in our parish.

Our challenge and obstacle to living the faith intensely, as a spiritual athlete, often result from overlooking and then forgetting our "intimate and vital bond to God." There is less outright rejection of Christ; rather, the concerns, preoccupations, and activities of life occupy the bandwidth of our minds, emotions, and hearts. Simply put, living as the Lord's disciple just doesn’t come to mind that often because we are busy. After some time of overlooking the relationship, unfortunately, it is then "forgotten."

The Discipleship Center has been designed to shine forth as a light on a hill, to awaken, accompany, and ignite Magdalen adults as disciples of Christ.

Forming Adult Disciples

July 5, 2024

May the Lord give you peace!

I only have a couple things to update you about this month regarding the Discipleship Center. Over the past few weeks, I have been following up directly with parishioners who have yet to activate their pledges. These conversations have gone very well. Also, the architect and general contractor are working on the final designs and actual cost to build the Discipleship Center. Once we receive the completed design and estimated costs, we will present the plan to the Bishop’s Building and Design Committee for approval. I am not sure when this will happen. Hopefully, by the end of August.

As I have mentioned, the Discipleship Center is an expression of our parish’s mission to Be Disciples, Make Missionary Disciples in those individuals that have the most potential to effect the renewal of the Catholic faith, namely, our adult parishioners. In one of the most important papal documents on catechesis in the twentieth century, Catechesi Tradendae, “On Catechesis in Our Time,” Pope St. John Paul II stated that adults “have the greatest responsibilities and the capacity to live the Christian message in its fully developed form.” Discipleship is directed to living out in word and deed the Christian message, i.e., the fullness of life of Jesus Christ. You might think that the youth are the key to the future. That we should invest more in youth discipleship and faith formation. Well, he would question that approach in virtue of the following statement: “The world in which the young are called to live and gives witness to the faith which catechesis seeks to deepen and strengthen is governed by adults.” He implies that the young will be hampered in living and giving witness to the faith if we as adults are not fulfilling our responsibility. I believe that one of the devil’s tactics in our day and age is to hyper-focus on the youth and to give scraps to the adults. When this happens, both the youth and adults get scraps. It is rare to find young people living out the faith when the parents are not witnessing to it, no matter how great a Catholic School or PSR program fulfills its mission.

Pope St. John Paul II exhorts us to restore adults to their proper role of leading the way of discipleship for our youth and society. For this reason, he stated that the “faith of these adults too should continually be enlightened, stimulated and renewed, so that it may pervade the temporal realities in their charge.” If you want to know what will be happening in the Discipleship Center—hopefully this time next year—you can bet it will be enlightening, stimulating, and renewing the faith life our adult parishioners in following the Master, Jesus Christ.

Focusing on Adult Discipleship

June 5, 2024

May the Lord give you peace!

I’d like to continue on with my Capital Campaign update from last week. I hold that the Tier 2 project of our For the Greater Glory of God Capital Campaign, namely, the Discipleship Center, is the most important for the future of Magdalen. Why? The Disciple- ship Center is being designed to be a place of encounter in order to build the two “lungs” of discipleship: a serious interior life of prayer and true spiritual friendship among the adults of our parish. We need both lungs to breathe properly and thrive. Prayer that has become a true spiritual life takes serious commitment, time, and learning. It is a rare bird that can cultivate a true spiritual life alone. In fact, I don’t believe it's possible. God created us for relationship with Himself and with one another. This is why spiritual friendship is the second lung in the life of discipleship. We need to accompany one another to go deeper, stay the course, and experience the true joy of discipleship.

For a long time, in fact, up until two years ago, I believed that the renewal of the Catholic faith depended on how well we formed our youth. Consequently, the strategy was to do everything to make our school truly Catholic, focused on prayer and discipleship and, most importantly, hiring teachers on fire for their faith. Three years ago after reviewing some discouraging surveys on Mass attendance among our students, I realized that we were not aligned for mission. Our work in the vineyard was not producing abundant fruit. From that moment, a conviction has lodged in my heart and mind: If we hope to have a Catholic parish that is thriving in the future, we can’t continue to keep giving our adults the leftovers. In other words, when it comes to the spiritual life of adults it is common to cut corners and to give the adults whatever is left over after covering the costs of school and youth programs. My realization was that we had the proverbial cart before the horse.

If our adults are not on fire with the faith, if our parents are not truly making Jesus Christ the center and priority of their lives, then we are actually giving our children the scraps. Parents are the first and most important disciple-makers in the life of their children. If the life of prayer is not burning in a parent and parents are not accompanying one another in spiritual friendship, very little will be passed on to their children no matter how Catholic or great a Catholic School professes itself to be.

We are entering into a new chapter at Magdalen. The building of the Discipleship Center is a manifestation of our belief that adults are no longer to receive the leftovers. The strategy to fulfill our parish mission—Be Disciples, Make Missionary Disciples—begins with us.

Next Steps in Our Capital Campaign

May 31, 2024

May the Lord give you peace! I pray that your summer is off to a great start! I want to give you an update and some thoughts on our Tier 1 projects and the Tier 2 project, the building of the Discipleship Center.

Importance of Maintaining our Facilities

The Tier 1 projects were the primary motivation to launch the Capital Campaign. These included several buildingmaintenance projects, such as the replacement of the HVAC systems and the school roof. It’s reassuring to know that our building repair and maintenance are in great shape. Because of the generous, sacrificial gifts of time, talent, and treasure of our parishioners, and a next-level Facilities Manager, Nathan Rausch, we can truly breathe a sigh of relief. We are no longer just “getting by” in taking good care of our beautiful facilities and church. Our Stewardship of Facilities Committee, chaired by Randy Sobba, has a great plan to stay on top of maintaining the excellence of our campus.

Building Progress on the Discipleship Center

Over the past several months, the Capital Campaign Building and Design Committee has come together several times to discuss the design and plan for the Discipleship Center. It has been so exciting to see things coming together first as a dream that are now becoming a reality. We recently met with the Diocesan Building Committee to seek approval to proceed with drafting full designs and drawings of the Discipleship Center. Bishop Kemme gave us his verbal approval on May 24.

I also had the opportunity to present early designs and layouts to the Pastoral Council. I would like to share with you some of their feedback. The Building and Design Committee will review each of the ideas to determine the viability of incorporating them into the actual layout and construction of the Discipleship Center. Here are some of the ideas and feedback:

• Adding noise-proof walls into the building specs for the smaller meeting rooms to ensure small group discussion privacy.

• Incorporate some outdoor space adjacent to the Discipleship Center for groups to use for meetings and prayer.

• Ensure that the kitchenette is sufficient to meet the demands of the Discipleship Center’s use.

• Include technology for the use of media in the main space.

Within the next few months, I hope to have some final drawings and sketches of the Discipleship Center to display in the Gathering Space.

Construction on School Roof Beginning Soon

May 23, 2024

We're in the second stage of our roofing replacement project this summer, and construction will be beginning on our school roof soon, on June 3. None of our campus improvements would be possible without our stewardship way of life and the generosity of all those who contributed to our Capital Campaign. Our combined efforts give glory to God and are building up His kingdom! Here's more with a video from Fr. Jirak on what to expect:

For The Greater Glory of God Capital Campaign May Update

May 5, 2024

May the Lord give you peace!

This past Friday, members of our Building and Design Committee met with the Diocesan Building Commission to seek approval for the design of our Discipleship Center. Our hope is to start construction this coming fall. Exciting!!!

The high-level purpose of the Discipleship Center is to awaken and accompany parishioners in living out their Catholic faith with passion. Living out the Catholic faith with passion is a visible manifestation of discipleship. All discipleship grows in personal relationships with others where there can be a true sharing “of one another’s thoughts, feelings, bearing with one another’s burdens, and preserving the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem).

Next Sunday we will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Before Jesus ascended into heaven he left the Apostles with the great commission, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations...” (Matthew 28:19). This verse was the inspiration for our parish mission statement:“Be Disciples, Make Missionary Disciples.” The Discipleship Center is a dedicated space that we designed to feel like a “second home” in which small- and medium-size groups of adults can meet and be about the things of the Lord, i.e., following the Lord, learning His Word, and becoming His disciples.

This month’s For the Greater Glory of God Capital Campaign update includes an overview of the status of our parishioner pledges. I am pleased to share that we are only a few thousand dollars from the high mark of what Steier Group estimated that our parish could raise. They estimated that we could raise between $4 to $5 million. To be exact, our total pledges are $4.94 million. As of March 31, 2024, we’ve collected $3.1 million, which is 63% of the total pledge amount. Additionally, we’ve collected $34,056 in Capital Campaign donations that aren’t attached to a pledge.

The other great news is that the Tier 1 projects came in significantly under budget—if we finish strong in completing our individual pledges we will be able to build the Discipleship Center as planned. The majority of our Tier 1 projects are slated to be completed this summer. The next step on Tier 2 is to finalize the designs and estimated costs for our Discipleship Center. We will continue to update you on our progress at the beginning of each month.

In order to finish our Capital Campaign strong, I ask that you please continue to make your pledged donations. If you have any unexpected issues that have come up since making your pledge, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.at the parish office to adjust the timeline to complete your pledge.

God has chosen each of us to be His disciples and bear fruit for Him. He appointed us at this time and place to build up His kingdom at Magdalen: “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain” (John 15:16). The Discipleship Center itself will not be the fruit that will remain, but the disciples nurtured and grown within its walls will bear fruit that will last forever. May our Capital Campaign continue to bear good fruit for the Lord and give Him glory!

Capital Campaign Tier One Spending Update and Details

April 5, 2024

He is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen!

This Easter greeting is at full pitch not only on Easter, but during the entire Octave (eight days) of Easter, which ends today, Divine Mercy Sunday. We know that the women went to the tomb to find the dead body of Jesus when the angel intervened and introduced a new horizon by announcing that He had risen: “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said” (Matthew 28:5-6). He is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen!

As promised in my bulletin article from last month, this update on the For the Greater Glory of God Capital Campaign highlights the spending on the Tier One projects. Nearly all of these projects are now complete. We began the flat roof replacement project last summer, and it will be completed in the summer of 2025. Sufficient funds have been placed into a special account to replace the components of our HVAC system as each one reaches the end of its useful life. For Tier One, we are under budget by $730,727 from the original plan. The under budget monies will be applied toward our Tier Two project—our Discipleship Center! Without this savings we would not be able to start work on the Discipleship Center. We are currently working on drawings and cost projections for the Discipleship Center, and I will share them with you once they are finalized. It’s important that each of us continue to fulfill our pledge obligations from the smallest to the largest so we can achieve our goals. Please continue to pray for our Capital Campaign as we build up God’s kingdom at Magdalen. Together, let us give glory to God!

Ad majorem Dei gloriam,

Tier 1 Project Update & Looking Ahead to Tier 2

March 1, 2024

May the Lord give you peace!

I want to share with you an update on our Capital Campaign projects. We are nearing the end of our Tier 1 projects phase. Here is the latest progress report on the projects for which we budgeted $3.7 million:

  • Roofs: Replace the original 20-year old flat roofs: 40% of these roofs were replaced last summer. 40% will be replaced this summer. The contract for this summer’s roof work is finalized. The remaining 20% will be completed in the summer of 2025.
  • School Walkway: The concrete walkway to the entrance of the school has been replaced.
  • Carpet: Replacement of the original hallway carpet will begin this summer. All the school hallway carpets are under contract to be completed this summer. We will replace the hallway carpet outside the parish office at the completion of the Discipleship Center.
  • Classrooms: 2 new classrooms were completed and blessed for use in December 2023.
  • Chillers: 2 new chillers have been ordered and will be installed on arrival. See the COOL video below on what chillers are!
  • Boilers & Water Heaters: Sufficient funds have been put into a special account to replace the boilers and water heaters as they fail.
  • HVAC: $100,000 has been put into a special account for ongoing upkeep of our HVAC systems.

I hope to share with you the total cost of the Tier 1 projects above very soon. My unofficial conjecture is that we will have saved approximately $500,000 from the architect’s and project managers original estimates.

I want to thank you for your generous and timely contributions to our Capital Campaign. As a parish, pledge fulfillment percentages have been high, and parishioners are continuing to fulfill their commitments. Our total pledge amount for the campaign is just shy of $5 million. I know that we can finish strong. We still have several gifts pending, which should leap us over the $5 million threshold. Moreover, I want to thank our Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee and Building and Design Committee for their excellent, excellent stewardship and oversight of our campaign and projects.

Another conjecture: I am estimating that close to $2 million of our campaign contributions will be available for the building of our Discipleship Center. The Building and Design Committee met with the architect last week to update the design concept.

My timeline for parishioner updates:

  • April 2024: Final numbers for the completion of the Tier 1 projects stated above.
  • May 2024: Showcase finalized drawings of the Discipleship Center.
  • June 2024: Present the estimated cost of the Discipleship Center.
  • September 2024: Begin construction of the Discipleship Center.

Please remember that the mentioned conjectures are my conjectures and estimates only. I just wanted to let you know what I am seeing and thinking in consultation with parish leaders, the Building and Design Committee, the Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee, and the architect.

This is SO EXCITING!!!! Please continue to join me in prayer for the success of the Capital Campaign. May we truly give glory to God as we seek to build up His kingdom at Magdalen.

Ad majorem Dei gloriam,

Fr. John F. Jirak, Pastor

New Classrooms Unveiled & Blessed
December 2023

The new classrooms are complete and our Middle School students are using their new Math and Social Studies classrooms! Moving to the new rooms is creating more space across our school including a dedicated Spanish classroom and now two resource rooms to better serve our students' needs.

Fr. Jirak said, "Over two years ago we launched a capital campaign and today I blessed two new classrooms. The cross in front of the two classrooms is the cross from the old Magdalen church. It’s a wonderful symbol of living stewardship across generations and that each generation builds upon the previous through the cross of sacrifice."

We are immensely blessed to have these new classrooms for our school children and teachers!

  ---------

Follow Up Phase Update
We have entered into the follow-up phase of the capital campaign. The follow-up phase has two components. The first includes the work of the Capital Campaign Committee to reach out to parishioners who have yet to make a gift. This is a silent and more personal effort.  Around 42% of the parish has responded with a commitment to the campaign.  We are pressing close to $5 million in pledges: $4.81 million to be exact.

The second phase of the campaign includes the regular updates to the parish on the financial gifts that have been received. We will also include updates on the initiation and progress of the campaign projects. The Building and Design Team will be coming together sometime this winter to begin discussing the construction plans.

Please know that the two top priorities of the Capital Campaign Committee through this entire process have been communication and transparency. These priorities will continue to order their work until the projects are finished. Please expect regular updates from me as your pastor and from the Capital Campaign Committee.

Please pray for the success of the campaign as we build up God’s kingdom at Magdalen.
Together, let us give glory to God!

Ad majorem Dei gloriam,
Fr. John F. Jirak, Pastor
