What are we learning this week:

Phonics - This week we will learn about combinations ar as in star, er as in butter, and or as in horse.

Language Arts -We will have 2 stories this week, Curious Geroge and the Dinosaur Adventure and This is Us.  We are reviewing all the sight words we have learned this year as well as main idea, sequencing, and opinion writing.

Math - We are finishing up measurement and starting sorting by multiple attributes.

Religion - We will finish up our Family Life book with the final chapter God's Gift of Community.  

Science/Social Studies - While we wait for our butterflies to hatch, we will learn about U.S. symbols such as the flag, bald eagle, and Statue of Liberty.

1.  There are lots of different dress days this last 2 weeks of school.  Be looking for emails from the office to explain special dress days.  The first one will be this Wednesday with a free dress day for the whole school meeting their AR points goal.

2.  May 17th-No school, Kindergarten round up

3.  May 21-Kindergarten Field Day 9-10:30, Students are allowed to wear shorts this day and an appropriate shirt (no tank tops) to school.  Don't forget to put on sunscreen BEFORE you come to school.  Please wear tennis shoes!

4.  May 23-Last day of school- Dismissal around 9:45. 

5.  Don't forget to bring a big brown paper bag to school by Monday, May 20th.  We will use this bag to bring all of our projects and supplies home.

6.  May 22nd-Cafeteria is closed, so please bring a home lunch and drink that day.  No pop please!

7.  Please make sure all AR books are returned by this Thursday, May 16th.  I will not be sending books home after this day.

 

This is my last newsletter for this year.  I have loved spending each day with your children.  They will do great in 1st grade!  Thank you for all your support this year!  We are almost to end of the Kindergarten race and are finishing strong!

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - This week we will learn about digraphs sh, th, and ch.

Language Arts -Our story is From Caterpillar to Butterfly.  Our sight words are:  find, from, came, and on.  We will do lots of writing this week as well as talk about Proper Nouns for people, places and pets.

Math - We are still learning about measurement.

Religion - In our Family Life book this week, we are talking about God's Gift of Love.   

Science/Social Studies - So many exciting things are happening in our classroom with our sunflowers growing and our caterpillars growing.  We will continue studying plants, living things, and nonliving things.

1.  Stewardship forms are due by Wednesday.  This is page 29 in the agenda.  Please fill out your child's stewardship hours, sign, and return to me by Wednesday.  Kindergartners should have done 30 minutes this year.

Phonics - This week we introduce sneaky (silent) e.  Sneaky e makes the vowel in the middle say it's name like in bake.

Language Arts -Our story is Zinnia's Flower Garden.  Our new sight words this week are she, all, her, when, some, go, for, here, they, and soon.

Math - We are starting our unit on measurement.

Religion - We are back to our Family Life books for the next few weeks.  This week will talk about how God wants us to be safe and all of his creations.

Science/Social Studies - We will start our unit on Living Things.  This week we will talk about plants and butterflies.

 

1.  Thank you to all the drivers to the Nature Center.  God gave us an absolutely beautiful day to explore his creations in nature!

2. Wednesday is our May jeans day for a $0.50 donation.

3.  May 1st-first day to wear uniform shorts.

Math - We are continuing to work on making sets with numbers up to 20.

Religion - Happy Easter!  Lots of Easter activities this week!

Science/Social Studies - We will finish up our unit on severe weather.

 

1.  April 26th-Field trip to the Nature Center, 9-11- students may wear jeans and a spirit wear shirt.  Please wear tennis shoes and bring a jacket!  We will go on a short hike while we are there.  Activities will be moved inside if it is raining.

2.  Don't forget to turn in pictures you are not purchasing from Spring pictures.  They are due by Friday.

3.  Book order forms are due Friday.  This is the last order for the year.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Now that we are done with learning all the letters of the alphabet, the last weeks of school we will concentrate on long vowels, digraphs, and different blends.  This week we are working on long vowel sounds and how to code long vowels.

Language Arts - For the next few weeks, our story is Mrs. Wishy Washy.  We are reviewing sight words this week.  We will do some comparing and contrasting and review verbs.

Math - We are continuing to work on making sets with numbers up to 20.

Religion - This week we focus on Holy Week.  We will learn about the Stations of the Cross and make a Stations book.

Science/Social Studies - We begin our unit on severe weather this week.  We will learn about different types of severe weather and how to stay safe during severe weather.

Religion - For the next few weeks, we will be working in our book called Family Life.  It will talk about the importance of family.

Science/Social Studies - We will finish up our Blue Kids unit on Bullying.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is w as in wagon.  

Language Arts - Our story this week is This is Science.  Our new sight words are is, of, many, where, how, and so.  We will be reviewing main idea and details, introducing question words, and writing about inventions.

Math - We will be finishing up unit 9 this week and start unit 10.  Unit 10 will cover addition up to 19.

Religion - For the next few weeks, we will be working in our book called Family Life.  It will talk about the importance of family.

Science/Social Studies - We will finish up our unit on Forces by building a structure that can move with dominoes.  

 

1.  Wednesday is our monthly jeans day.  Please bring $0.50 if your child would like to participate by wearing jeans and a spirit wear shirt.

2.   Book orders are due on Friday.

3.  Forms went home on Monday for our field trip on April 26th.  Please return permission forms by Friday, April 12th.

4.  Just an FYI,  I will be gone Thursday and Friday for my mother-in-law's funeral.  Please keep me in your prayers as we travel.  Thank you!

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is x as in fox.  

Language Arts - Our story this week is What a Beautiful Sky.  We are reviewing sight words this week.  We will also review what makes a good sentence and work on sequencing.

Math - We are working on decomposing addition problems.  For example, 5=3+2.  This is confusing for them at first, but it will get easier the more we work on it.

Religion - We are finishing up on the Trinity and will be working on learning the Glory Be.  Please practice this at home.

Science/Social Studies - We are having a great time continuing to learn about Force and Motion.  This week we will see what happens when objects collide!

 

1.  We had a FABULOUS day for our field trip last Friday.  Thank you to everyone who drove!

2.  Report cards will be coming home on Wednesday.

3.  Spring has arrived!  But, it is still pretty chilly when we go out to recess at 9:30.  PLEASE send a jacket for your student.  Our playground is an open field where the wind can make it really cold in the mornings.

4.  Book order forms will go home on Tuesday.  They will be due back by Friday, April 5th.

5.  April 3rd-Monthly jeans day

6.  April 26th-Field trip to Nature Center.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is J as in jar.  

Language Arts - Our story this week is Turtle Splash.  We will introduce the sight words are and now.  Past tense verbs will be new to us this week and we will review future tense verbs.  Last, we will review cause and effect and do some writing.

Math - We will be working on addition and subtraction this week as well as graphing, sorting, and counting Lucky Charm marshmallows.

Religion - What is the Trinity?  Who is St. Patrick?

Science/Social Studies - Forces, Motion, Direction, and speed are all new words in Science this week.  Ask your student about our experiments with force using marbles and hot wheel cars. 

 

1.  Field trip Friday to the Children's Theater.  We will leave at 9:15 and return around 12:15.  Please remember to send a sack lunch and drink for our trip as well as a booster for your child if you are not driving.  No pop/soda please!  We will wear our uniforms.

2.  Casual Portraits are on Wednesday.  Please see the school handbook for appropriate dress.

3.  Friday is the end of the 3rd quarter (how did that happen!!).  Report cards will be coming home next week.

4.  April 26th-Field trip to Nature Center.

I hope everyone had a great break!  We are jumping back in full force as we have so much yet to learn these last few months of Kindergarten.  Thank for the opportunity to spend each day with your child!

Phonics - Our letter this week is V as in vest.  

Language Arts - We are still reading Dr. Seuss stories.  This week we working on spelling, descriptive words, and writing about our favorite Dr. Seuss book.

Math - We are finishing up our unit on Subtraction.

Religion - This week we are beginning our unit on Lent.  We will go to Mass on Ash Wednesday at 12:00.

Science/Social Studies - We will be talking about welcoming others and how it feels to be left out.  What can we do when we feel left out?  

 

 

1.  Don't forget to return permission forms for our next field trip,  March 22nd to the Children's Theatre.  Forms are due back by Friday!

2.  March 6th-Ash Wednesday.  We will go to church that day as a class at Noon.

3.  March 8th-Noon Dismissal

4.  One of the students in Mrs. Shepherd's class is still missing their booster from the last field trip.  Please double check your booster and make sure it's yours.  Thanks so much!

Math - We will be starting our unit on subtraction.

Religion - We will introduce the word Grace which is God's life within us.  Grace allows us to live a more virtuous life.

Science/Social Studies - We are starting our unit on the Earth this week.  We will learn about the equator, north pole, and south pole.

 

1.  Thursday is our field trip to the food pantry.  We will leave at 8:30 and return by 10:30.  As of today, I DO NOT have enough drivers!  If you signed up to drive and you can take more in your car, please let me know ASAP.  Please don't forget to send your child's booster seat if you aren't driving.

2.  Book orders are due on Friday, February 22th.

3.  Thank you for all the Valentine treats!  I'm so blessed to spend each day with your children!

Math - We are continuing to work on numbers to 100.

Religion - We will continue working on Parables this week.  We will also learn about St. Valentine.

Science/Social Studies - We will do a Blue Kids lesson on bullying.

 

1.  February 14th- Valentine party in the morning and Noon Dismissal.  Conferences from 1-8.  Conferences are optional unless I requested one with you.  No lunch or latchkey.  

2.  February 15th-No School  

3.  February 16th-No School, President's day.

4.  Don't forget to send 26 Valentine's to school on Thursday.  Please have your child sign the cards on the inside, but do not put names on the outside of the card.  

5.  Book orders will be due on Friday, February 22th.

6.  Thursday, February 21st, Food Pantry Field Trip.  You may send food and bags at any time.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is C as in cat.  We are also learning the k & c spelling rule.

Language Arts - Tuesday is the 100th day of school, so lots of 100th day books this week.  We will also review sight words and do lots of writing about 100 this week.

Math - We are continuing to work on numbers to 100.

Religion - Parables is our concept this week.  We will cover The Good Samaritian, Jesus Feeds the 5000, and the Good Shepherd.

Science/Social Studies - We will be finishing up our unit on Kansas this week.  Students will be bringing home a sentence strip on Monday where they were supposed to write their address.  If your child doesn't know their address, please practice this at home.

 

1.   We had a great Catholic School Week!  We are so blessed at Magdalen Catholic School!

2.  A field trip form is coming home on Monday for our field trip to the Daily Bread Food Pantry.  Our class will go on Thursday, February 21st from 8:30-10:30.  Please return the form by Feb. 11th.

3.  February 14th- Valentine party in the morning and Noon Dismissal.  Conferences from 1-8.  A note is going home today about our Valentine's Day Party.

4.  February 16th-No School, President's day.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is Z.

Language Arts - Our story this week is Dan the Flying Man.  Our new sight word this week is over.   We will be practicing our writing this week and reviewing setting and characters.

Math - We are working on numbers to 100.

Religion - This week we will talk about stewardship, fairness, and sharing.  We will learn about St. Katherine Drexel. 

Science/Social Studies - Social Studies is all about Kansas this week.  We will learn the state symbols and where we are located on a map.

 

1.   It's not too late to participate in the free dress this week.  If you didn't bring your money today, bring it tomorrow.  All money collected goes to the St. Katherine Drexel fund.

2.  We are planning a field trip to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry during the week of Feb. 19-21.  I will let you know when we have an exact date.  Our remaining field trips our scheduled on March 22 to the Children's Theatre and April 26th to the Nature Center.  All of our field trips are in the morning.

Math - We are learning about addition sentences, and the zero and plus 1 rule. 

Religion - This week we will continue talking about miracles.  

Science/Social Studies - In Science, we will continue talking about being a Steward of Creation which is taking care of God's creations living and nonliving.  This week we will focus on air.

 

1.   Wednesday is Mustang Matters, therefore, it's a free jeans day!  Students may wear jeans and a Magdalen spirit wear shirt.

2.  We are planning a field trip to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry during the week of Feb. 19-21.  I will let you know when we have an exact date.  Our remaining field trips our scheduled on March 22 to the Children's Theatre and April 26th to the Nature Center.  All of our field trips are in the morning.

Math - We are starting addition this week. 

Religion - This week we will start talking about Baptism, miracles, and parables.  

Science/Social Studies - In Science, we will continue talking about being a Steward of Creation which is taking care of God's creations living and nonliving.  This week we will focus on land and water.

 

1.  If you have not returned school costumes from the Christmas play, please return these A.S.A.P.

2.  We are planning a field trip to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry during the week of Feb. 19-21.  I will let you know when we have an exact date.  Our remaining field trips our scheduled on March 22 to the Children's Theatre and April 26th to the Nature Center.  All of our field trips are in the morning.

What are we learning this week:

Phonics - Our letter this week is R.

Language Arts - We are reading Christmas stories.  We will review sight words, review nouns, sequencing, and story recall.

Math - We are working on 1 and 2 more and 1 and 2 fewer.  We are also working on putting numbers in order.

Religion - We are learning about the Nativity.  We will also talk about St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are hard at work on our Christmas Play!

Science/Social Studies - We are finishing up on Wants and Needs and talking about saving and money.  Ask your child about Dynamic Dollars!

 

1.  We are working really hard on our play!  We are so excited to share it with you!!  Our Dress rehearsal is Dec. 17th at 10:00 A.M.  Please send you child's costume with them Monday morning.  We will change into costumes around 9:15 for our dress rehearsal.  Any parents who can come help us get in our costumes we would greatly appreciate it.  Just let me know!

2.  Evening performance of the play is Dec. 18 at 7:00 P.M.   Students will need to be here in costume at 6:45.  

3.  December 19th -11:15 Dismissal

4.  December 20th-January 2nd Christmas Break

Language Arts - Our stories for the next few weeks will all be about Halloween and Pumpkins.  This week we will practice following directions and listening skills and sight words.

Math -  We are continuing on Unit 2 and will be comparing and ordering numbers 0-5.  We will also do some fun Halloween math.

Religion - All Saints Day

Science/Social Studies - Community Helpers

 

 

1.  Our Halloween parade and party is Wednesday.  Don't forget to send costumes on Wednesday.  No weapons please!  Any help with costumes at 12:00, would be great!   We will go on our parade shortly after that.  Our party will be after the Great Pumpkin around 2:40.

2.  Wednesday is also a free jeans day.  Students may wear Magdalen spiritwear or a black, orange, or Halloween shirt.

3.  No School Thursday and Friday.  Enjoy the long weekend!!!
