Happy 2019!

The 4th-8th graders finished their roller skating unit. I hope they will continue to utilize their skating skills on the weekends!

4th-7th graders reviewed their fitness scores from the fall, and identified their lowest score.  They were then put into groups according to the skill they needed to work on the most. Each day those groups will complete a specific workout to assist them in improving that deficiency.

They are also working on basketball skills and rhythms, both line dances and partner dances.

Kindergarten -3rd grade are working on many basic skills, including jumping, jump rope, listening skills, following directions, choosing and working with different groups are some of these skills.

Please look at the FITNESS STANDARDS, at the side under Documents, for your child's age group.

We pre-test in September, and then will try to meet standards during our post test during April.

Welcome Back! Super excited to get started with the 2018-19 school year!
Please make sure your kids are wearing athletic/tennis shoes for PE class.

1A, 2A, 3A, 8A:  Mon/Wed

1B, 2B, 3B, 8B:  Tues/Thurs

4A, 5A, 6A, 7A: Mon/Thurs

4B, 5B, 6B, 7B: Tues/Fri

KA, KB:  Wed/Fri

Thank you!

Kudos to 5th graders for a great program, as well as the 1st and 2nd graders!

3rd and 4th grade program April 25th.

2nd-7th graders will be focused on Fitness Gram testing the month of April.

Kindergarten and 1st will be working on several basic motor skills, including of rolling (bowling) and striking (ball on a tee).

Grades 3-7 have weekly fitness homework.

The homework is grade specific, matching the standard they have to meet to pass the April Fitness Gram tests.

They are required to complete the fitness homework 3 days/week, and takes less than 5 minutes/day.

Last year was our pilot year for the fitness homework, and we saw large gains in all fitness tests for all grades participating.

The grading is as follows:

10 points/week (3 points/day + 1 point for handing it in on time)

5 points for late work (due the following morning before school)

I only have the students 2 days a week, and if they are absent it can be difficult for them to find time to see me.  If they lost their fitness slip, or did not get one, they can make one on notebook paper.

Due to the fact that I only see the students 2 times/week, and I have 10 classes participating in this homework, approximately 250 students, it is difficult to keep up with absences and different issues, please have your student come to me if there is any problems.

Due dates:

3A: Monday

3B, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A: Thursday

4B, 5B, 6B, 7B: Friday

Thank you for your support with this task, as it takes a village!

I am so excited to start my 10th year at Magdalen!

*6th graders will not need their PE uniforms until 2nd semester.

*7th and 8th graders will need their PE uniforms immediately.

*All students will start each class with 10 points.  They will keep their points by wearing their PE uniform, participating and behaving appropriately.

*All middle school students are required to make up points for an unexcused absence, by handwriting a 1 page report about the activity they missed.  The paper is due the first day they have p.e. upon return.

*Check power school occasionally to monitor your students progress in p.e.. Click on PE to discover what each grade is for, and what the students have been learning.

*If any student has an illness or injury that prevents them from participating in p.e., they have 2 class periods with a parent note, but then must have a doctor note. Please include what the injury/illness is, and when they can return to activity. The student will have an alternative assignment while sitting out.

Thanks parents for helping your kiddos learn the importance of exercise and eating healthy!

Merry Christmas!

1. trunk lift:  lower back flexability  (lay on stomach, hands and feet on ground, look at floor, lift up as high as you can)

2. sit and reach:  hamstring flexability (1 leg bent, 1 leg straight, reach as far forward as possible with both hands stacked)

3. curl-up: abdominal strength (legs bent, hands on floor, sit all the way up and down to cadence, feet must stay on floor but can't be held down)

4. push-up: upper body strength (feet and hands only on floor, arms must go down to a 90 degree angle, must follow cadence)

5. pacer: cardiovascular endurance (run to a cadence, 20m as long as possible)

**Please work on these fitness components at home.  Two times/week of class is not enough time to make a lot of improvement.

Middle School:

There have been a lot of PE uniforms left on the locker room floors. I have picked up several PE suits every day after school. New Policy: $1 to get your uniform back from me.  If student does not pay $1 within 24 hours, they will receive a demerit.  (The $1 will be donated to the jeans day charity that month.)

Non-suits result in a 0 for that day, like a missing assignment.  The student has 1 week to submit a 1 page paper on the activity we are currently working on in class. That paper will be considered a late assignment, so will be work 64%.

4th-7th grade:

Students are finishing a flag football unit with a worksheet or test covering the terms and rules they learned during this unit.  The next unit will be team handball.

Students are focusing on gross motor skills--throwing, catching and dribbling.

All students must earn their daily points.  If students are not actively engaged in the activity, they will lose points that day.

All students are encouraged to play 60 minutes every day.  Students can also work on sit ups, push ups, hamstring stretches, and cadrio vascular fitness.

All:  Please wear tennis shoes on PE days :)
