PE SHORTS

4th-7th grade students have 1 more week of roller skating. They are getting a lot better at staying on their feet, and are working on stopping (very important!),and skating backwards. They are playing a game called 4 corners, to practice stopping, and also limbo.

Come and watch if you get a chance!

Kindergarten- 3rd grade students are focusing on throwing and catching.

When you play catch at home, watch for them to step with their opposite foot as they throw. They are also working on starting with their side to their target and rotating their trunks as they throw.

**All students need to continue to do the "Sponge Bob Challenge" every day. Fitness testing will be in early April.

They are focusing on:

push-ups (arms at a 90 degree angle)

sit-ups , called curl-ups on the fitness test (knees bent--hold feet down by themselves--hands stay on floor)

sit and reach (hamstring flexibility)

pacer test/running

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thank you so much for the many Christmas gifts and cards! We have a very generous community!

In class we are continuing to focus on healthy eating choices and fitness goals.

We are also finishing some rhythms/geo mats. Great for cardiovascular work as well as coordination and firing both right brain/left brain.

4th-7th grade will be roller skating in February, so look for a permission slip to be coming home in a couple of weeks! (skating in the Magdalen gym for 2 weeks) How fun is that?!

PE SHORTS

K-8th grade:

All students have been discussing staying healthy.

We focused on 4 important things to keep us healthy.

1. Wash your hands with soap and water-often.

2. Keep your hands out of your mouth.

3. Eat healthy.

4. Play 60 minutes a day!

We will continue to discuss these 4 things, and focusing next week on nutrition and "our plate".

The next week, we will log our activity per day.

PE SHORTS

The kids did a great job with fitness testing. We will spend the next 6 months discussing and incorporating ways to improve in all categories.

One thing all of the kids are challenged to do is the "Sponge Bob Challenge". I used Sponge Bob as an example, because all age levels know who he is.

The point to the challenge is this: any time you are watching a 30 minute show, sit on the floor and stretch during the show. When the first commercial break comes on, do as many push-ups as you can during that break-the show comes back on, stretch. During the next commercial break, do as many sit-ups as you can...

I ask the kids to do the "Sponge Bob Challenge" every day they do not have p.e., so remind your kiddo's of the challenge, and join them!

P.E. in October

Grades 2-7 are currently taking the fitness gram pre-test. This includes the sit and reach (flexibility), curl-up (abdominal strength), push-up (upper body strength), and pacer (cardio vascular endurance).

The 2nd and 3rd are also working on jump rope skills, and the 4th-7th are playing cooperative volleyball games.

Kdg and first are also working on jump rope skills.

Please remind your students to wear tennis shoes on their p.e. day. :)
